Christmas crashes prove deadly on NZ roads


Three people have died following crashes on the roads during the holiday period.

This afternoon, police confirmed one person died following a crash involving a car and a truck on SH1/Taieri Plains Highway, Waihola, in Otago.

The driver of the car died at the scene.

The crash was reported to police at about 9.15am and the road remained closed at 3pm.

Another person died following an crash involving a motorcycle at the intersection of Broadley Downs and Gordonton Road, Gordonton, in Waikato.

The motorcyclist died at the scene.

The crash was reported to police just after 9.20am.

And last night, one person died in a two-car crash which injured five people south of Taupō.

Earlier today, emergency services were called to Goodwood Heights in Auckland’s Counties Manukau after a vehicle crashed near Ransom Smyth Drive.

Two people had serious injuries.
