A council in Sydney’s south-east has announced it will hold New Year’s Eve fireworks this year.

Liverpool City Council will hold an event called NYE: Light Up the Sky on December 31.

Last year the council held a “driveway” display and it indicated this year’s event would be similar.

It said it would involve “simultaneous fireworks displays across multiple sites, set to reach the homes and driveways of more than half of the residents across the Liverpool region”.

“Understandably, there is still a level of uncertainty of what the roadmap for NSW looks like after we reach the vaccination targets and into the latter months of this year,” Mayor of Liverpool Wendy Waller said.

“However, Council is showing what can be done with some innovation and creativity and is leading the way for COVID safe events in a post-lockdown environment.”

The announcement comes after Sydney City Council said it’s not holding the traditional 9pm fireworks this year again because of coronavirus.

The midnight display will be held, but it’s not known what the plans are for crowds.
